Radiation Surveys

Radiation sources are often present in the workplace and the environment. These sources may be in the form of static radiation gauges, X-ray cabinets, radiopharmaceuticals used in nuclear medicine, or unwanted contaminants from industrial processes. Government Regulations, Codes of Practice and Occupational Health and Safety Guidelines often require that the extent of radiation present be closely monitored and identified.

Australian Radiation Services Pty. Ltd. (ARS) is well equipped to conduct radiation surveys in diverse situations around Australia and New Zealand. Reasons for conducting radiation surveys can be as varied as the survey locations themselves.

Some areas routinely surveyed for the presence of radioactivity include former medical and industrial sites undergoing re-development, production plants involved in the processing of naturally-occurring raw materials where radioactivity may be generated as unwanted by-product or concentrated during processing, and around X-ray equipment commonly used in research establishments and universities or as baggage inspection units in airports.

The identification and quantification of a radiation hazard is paramount in the development of procedures to handle or contain the hazard. Information obtained can be used to compare with prescribed limits outlined in Codes of Practice, and actions adopted to rectify problems should they arise.

A comprehensive report is issued after all surveys detailing measurements performed, results obtained and outlining recommendations.
