Survey and Contamination Monitor Calibrations
Survey InstrumentsSurvey instruments are calibrated in a 137Cs beam that is traceable to the Australian National Standard of Exposure and undergo thorough electronic testing where applicable. A current Regulation 13 certificate is held for the calibration sources.
A large range of survey monitors can be calibrated, encompassing various detector types, including ionisation chambers (e.g. Mini-Instruments "Smart Ion"), energy-compensated GM tubes (e.g. Radix 2001, Automess 6150 AD6) and NaI detectors (e.g. Exploranium GR-135).
Contamination MonitorsThe response of contamination monitors is tested with wide area reference alpha and beta sources. Australian Radiation Services Pty. Ltd. (ARS) has a current Regulation 21 certificate issued by the National Standards Commission of Australia. The response to standard gamma sources and the relative response to gamma-radiation are also evaluated where applicable.
The types of contamination monitors tested include those with thin-window GM tubes (e.g. Mini-Instruments Series 900 and associated probes, RAM GENE (internal detector), Health Physics Instruments CYPHER 5000 and GM pancake probe), and dual-phosphor detectors (e.g. Electra and associated probes).
Electronic Personal DosemetersPersonal dosemeters are calibrated in a 137Cs beam that is traceable to the Australian National Standard of Exposure. During calibration, a PMMA is used to simulate radiation backscatter from the human body. Some examples of personal electronic dosemeters calibrated at ARS are the Rados RAD-60, Isotrak Doseguard Plus and the Autonnic Model 12 DMC MGP 2000.
Important information for all calibrations- Expected calibration time is 15 working days.
- Hire monitors are available at a cost of $143 for the duration of calibration.
- A full certificate and report are issued at completion of calibration.
